Manager or Leader – The Behavioral Traits…

Share

Much has been written and discussed on this topic, and it will continue to be fertile dialog ground for a long time to come.

In this brief – I will share three observable traits that you can see to discern if someone is being more of a leader than a manager or otherwise.

Manager

  • Tells you what to do, and often how to.
  • Pushes you to accomplish what is on his/her agenda.
  • Wants to be understood, and may or may not care about understanding.

Leader

  • Explains the why of what needs to be done, and encourages you to figure out the how.
  • Pulls you to accomplish that which is good for you, aligning it with his deliverables.
  • Seeks to understand first, then understood (adopted from Stephen Covey).
